Won Academy Awards for Best Actor for On the Waterfront 1954 and The Godfather 1972. A Streetcar Named Desire, on screen in 1951 after the 1947 stage run, transformed American acting with Actors Studio training behind it. Julius Caesar 1953 and Last Tango in Paris 1972 brought further nominations. He ranked fourth among male screen legends in the 1999 American Film Institute list, and his influence on later actors is regarded as unmatched in the postwar era.
