London born actor, director, and composer who defined silent era comedy. The Tramp character, bowler hat, mustache, and cane, debuted in 1914 and carried City Lights 1931, Modern Times 1936, and The Great Dictator 1940. He co founded United Artists in 1919 and received an honorary Academy Award in 1972. The Gold Rush 1925 remains among the most celebrated films of the silent era.
