His 1972 Metropolitan Opera performance of nine high Cs in a Donizetti aria earned a record seventeen curtain calls. Signature roles include Rodolfo in La Boheme and Cavaradossi in Tosca. He won five Grammy Awards and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2001.
