Trumpeter and singer whose Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings of the 1920s, including West End Blues, set the template for jazz improvisation. His scat singing shaped jazz vocals, and Hello Dolly 1964 knocked The Beatles from number one on the pop chart. What a Wonderful World 1967 became a global standard. He received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1972.
